10 macOS Menu Bar Tips You Probably Didn't Know

The macOS menu bar runs along the top of your screen, but most users only glance at it for the time and Wi-Fi status. This thin strip of pixels is actually one of the most powerful parts of macOS - and almost nobody uses it to its full potential. Here are 10 ways to unlock it.

1. Hold ⌘ to Rearrange Icons

You can reorder menu bar icons by holding the Command key and dragging them left or right. This works for most system icons like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery, and Sound. Third-party app icons can usually be rearranged the same way.

Pro tip: Put your most-used icons on the right side, closest to the clock, where your eye naturally goes.

2. Use It as Your App Launcher

With ShortcutDock, the menu bar becomes your primary app launcher. One click reveals a dropdown with all your apps in a visual grid - faster than Launchpad, Spotlight, or the Dock. The menu bar is always visible, always accessible, and takes up zero additional space.

3. Option-Click for Hidden Info

This is one of macOS's best-kept secrets:

  • Option-click Wi-Fi - shows your IP address, MAC address, signal strength (RSSI), noise level, channel, and security type
  • Option-click Bluetooth - shows firmware versions and battery levels for connected devices
  • Option-click Volume - lets you instantly switch audio input/output devices without opening System Settings
  • Option-click Notification Centre - toggles Do Not Disturb on/off (in older macOS versions)

4. Remove Unwanted Icons

Hold ⌘ and drag any system icon off the menu bar to remove it. A poof animation confirms removal. This works for Spotlight, Siri, Screen Mirroring, and most other system icons. To bring them back, go to System Settings → Control Centre.

5. Use Bartender or Ice for Overflow

If your menu bar gets crowded with third-party app icons, use a menu bar manager. Ice (free and open source) or Bartender ($16) let you hide overflow icons behind a collapsible section. This keeps your menu bar clean while still giving you access to everything.

6. Quick Note from Menu Bar

Click the date/time area in the menu bar to reveal Notification Centre. Scroll down to find Quick Note, or use the keyboard shortcut 🌐 + Q (Globe key + Q). This creates a new note in Apple Notes instantly - perfect for capturing thoughts without switching apps.

7. Focus Modes Control

Click the Control Centre icon (the two-slider icon) to quickly toggle Focus modes. You can switch between Do Not Disturb, Work, Personal, Sleep, and any custom Focus modes you've created. Much faster than navigating through System Settings.

8. Stage Manager Toggle

If you use Stage Manager for window organisation, you can toggle it on/off from Control Centre in the menu bar. This is much faster than going through System Settings → Desktop & Dock every time you want to switch modes.

9. Battery Health Check

Click the battery icon while holding Option to see your battery condition. It will show "Normal," "Service Recommended," or "Replace Soon." This gives you a quick health check without opening System Information. On MacBooks with Apple Silicon, you can also see the cycle count in System Information → Power.

10. AirDrop from the Menu Bar

Open Control Centre and click the AirDrop section to toggle it on/off and change receiving settings (Contacts Only, Everyone for 10 Minutes, etc.). No need to open Finder or navigate to System Settings. This is particularly useful when someone needs to AirDrop you a file quickly.

Bonus: Make the Menu Bar Work Harder

The menu bar is prime real estate on your Mac. Every icon should earn its place. Here's our recommended setup:

  1. ShortcutDock - for launching apps (replaces the Dock entirely)
  2. Wi-Fi - for network status
  3. Battery - for power monitoring
  4. Sound - for quick output device switching
  5. Clock - for time (obviously)

Everything else can be hidden behind Ice or Bartender. A clean menu bar is a productive menu bar.
